Ati-atihan

Every third week of January, the seaside town of Kalibo in the province of Aklan, erupts in a rowdy mardi-gras-style celebration in honor of the Sto. Nino, or Christ child. Costumed merrymakers blacken their faces with soot and dance in the streets, recalling the aboriginal natives called Aetis. Thus, the word ati-atihan, "like the Aeites".
